1 Day Safer People Handling

A full, practical course covering safe people-handling techniques, equipment use and risk assessment. Suitable for staff in care homes, supported living, mental health, community settings and hospitals.

What this course covers:

  • Legal framework, responsibilities and organisational expectations

  • Anatomy and biomechanics: protecting the spine and avoiding injury

  • Dynamic risk assessment: the TILE approach (Task, Individual, Load, Environment)

  • Communication, dignity and consent — handling with a trauma-informed approach

  • Safe assisting techniques including:

  • guiding and supporting mobility

  • assisting to stand and sit

  • repositioning in a chair or bed

  • turning and lateral movement

Hoisting practice:

  • assessing when hoisting is appropriate

  • choosing the correct sling

  • using mobile hoists & gantry systems safely

  • maintaining dignity and comfort during hoisting

  • Use of slide sheets, transfer boards and other aids

  • Team handling, coordination and verbal cueing

  • Avoiding restrictive or unsafe practices

  • Practical assessments and scenario-based training
